HAIM at The Forum

Earlier this week I went to see one of my favourite bands of 2013, HAIM, at The Forum in Kentish Town. The opening support came from my friends Childhood who did a great job at getting the crowd warmed up. Next up was Saint Raymond who also did a great job at getting the crowd going. Often the crowd is impatient during support acts because they want the main event but everyone seemed to love both Childhood and Saint Raymond. Hailing from California, HAIM have had an absolutely massive 2013 which saw them play at Glastonbury as well as topping the BBC’s Sound of 2013 music industry poll as one of the most promising acts of the year, and as we close out the year I would say it has certainly been a busy year for them. The three sisters are all talented multi-instrumentalists and have a really good reputation for interacting with the crowd and tonight was no different! It was an awesome show and I’ve been playing the album on repeat since. Can’t wait to see them again early next year! Jenn Bostic at The Borderline

Last night I met up with my good friend and music blogger extraordinaire Milky Tea Kid and we headed over to see the very talented Jenn Bostic at The Borderline in London. Jenn performed with a full band in the intimate venue and did some old favourites as well as new tracks, with the audience singing along to each song. The band got kicked off stage for a few songs, during which Jenn performed Jealous of the Angels, which was written in memory of her father. The entire room fell silent during the moving song and you could see how emotional it was for Jenn. This emotion translated to the crowd and you could have heard a pin drop as everyone listened to the haunting lyrics with a sense of revere. Jenn also performed some more upbeat songs such as Gay or Taken which got the crowd singing and dancing along. After the show Jenn took the time to talk to her fans which she does both in person and on social media. Birdy at The Forum with support from Richard Judge

On Halloween I headed to Kentish Town to see my pal Richard Judge support Birdy at The Forum. I have always liked The Forum as a music venue but hadn’t been there since the refurbishment which I have to say looks great! If you were at the gig and were wondering where you could hear more of Richard Judge’s music, just head on over to his SoundCloud page where you can find a few songs as well as a free download of Foundations. If you haven’t heard his music before, check it out! My favourite is Show Me Love which you can also find on SoundCloud! After a great 30 minute set from Richard, Birdy came on stage complete with a personalised pumpkin, and opened with her song Strange Birds. Birdy has been around for a couple of years now and is most well known for her cover of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love but I’ll be honest and say I hadn’t really heard many of her other songs before the show. Lissie at KOKO

Earlier this week I headed to KOKO in Camden to see Lissie perform. I really like KOKO as a venue (and not just because it’s a 10 minute walk from my house!) so I was pretty excited to see her there! She performed songs from her new album Back to Forever, as well as songs from her first album Catching a Tiger. My favourite song from the new album has to be Shameless. I’ve had it on repeat since the gig and if you haven’t heard it I really recommend you check it out. Lissie is back in London in March and I will definitely be going to the gig. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis at O2 Academy Brixton

Being a big fan of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and their album The Heist, I was pretty excited to go to the show at O2 Academy Brixton and take some photos. Macklemore is a fan of getting right into the crowd during his performances so all the photos had to be taken from elevated platforms on the side. A bit different from the usual shooting from the pit but it was a nice perspective and I’m sure the crowd enjoyed not having their view blocked for the first three songs! It was a great show and I’m looking forward to seeing them again! Also because I know people have asked this a lot: It’s pronounced Mack-le-more not Mack-el-more. Shooting the Perseid Meteor Shower

This past weekend was the peak of the Perseid meteor shower which happens every year. Perseids are primarily visible in the northern hemisphere, with the best viewing times being between midnight and dawn. Being a big fan of space and science in general, I look forward to meteor showers every year, but living in London I have never tried to take photographs because of all the light pollution. This year, I thought I’d give it a go. It was my first time seeing the Milky Way in person but because of all the light pollution it wasn’t as visible as I would have liked. Next year, if the forecast is clear skies I’m going to make it my mission to go out into the countryside and try again. Although the rate of meteors was an average of 60 per hour, I didn’t manage to capture any in my photographs. Still learning the basics of astrophotography so pleased with how these photos came out for my first attempt. Stars are awesome!
